One prominent portion of this class that I worked extensively on was focused on a short story written by Mary Shelley, called “Mortal Immortal”. The underlying theme Shelley conveys in her work is that immortality, while appealing at the surface, bears horrific consequences that reveal themselves only after one takes the step forward into that realm, after which there is no turning back. Shelley uses literary devices such as imagery, foreshadowing, character development, point of view, and irony to convey her message. In the IP One assignment, the Interpretive Problem Essay, and the IP Two assignment, I have expanded my analysis on the motif of “immortality” that is so prevalent in this short story. I hope that as you read through my analyses, you will gain a sense of the direction that Shelley intended for her story and the ways in which she conveyed her message to her readers.
Below is a link to the Wikipedia site for this story. Read through the short summary of the story and some of its history, so you can better understand my analyses on this work.
