Carnatic Vocal Arangetram
September 2013
Carnatic music is an ancient classical vocal art form originating in Southern India. I have been training in this art since I was four years old, having learned first from my grandma, then from Ms. Kalyani Sharma in Mumbai, India, and for the last 6 years, from Madurai Sundar in Troy, MI. The Carnatic Vocal Arangetram is traditionally the debut solo recital of a student when he or she has mastered the art form to a level of fairly advanced proficiency. In my case, the word "Arangetram" was not exactly appropriate as this was not my debut performance, but it was the first one that my father hosted for our friends at home as none of them had seen any of my previous performances in India.
The performance took place in September 2013 at Strongsville, OH. The summer of 2013 was a time of intense preparation, for which I lived at my teacher's house for two weeks receiving training everyday. The repertoire I performed for the 2 1/2 hour recital, was prepared over the course of a full year of weekly lessons. The event was a spectacular experience for me as I was fortunate to have world-class expert accompanists play violin, kanjira and mridangam (the latter two are Indian percussion instruments) alongside me. Also, the arrangements for the event and subsequent dinner involved so many family friends, and their support was of immense help to my father, for which I am eternally grateful. The slideshow below contains a few photographs from the event.
